Marriage - What is it all about?

The Word of God teaches that marriage is a sacred union between a man and a woman, designed by God for the benefit and blessing of mankind. It is within the bond of marriage that lives are molded for all eternity. God created the first home in the Garden of Eden to serve as "caretakers" of His creation. Marriage was instituted to extend into future generations, a godly heritage of worshipping God and caring for His creation. The husband was to be a human reflection of God's love for mankind and the wife, a picture of mankind's loving submission to God.

In a day when the sanctity of marriage has been reduced, it is our biblical conviction that the church must speak to the issue with a biblical clarity and confidence. Community is a local church and it is our call to build godly, Christian families. Our passion and conviction is to keep a biblically high view of marriage.

What does a biblical view of marriage look like?

A Christ Centered Union

Marriage is intended to be a beautiful picture of Christ's love and devotion to His Bride, the church. Therefore, a marriage is to be a life long union of faithfulness between a husband and wife, each of whom has trusted in Jesus Christ. Their relationship to one another is to be one of maturity in Christ. Spiritual disciplines should be in place so that the foundation of an authentic, vital walk with Christ provides the foundation for their home. The wedding and celebration ought to exemplify their desire to exalt Christ and proclaim the gospel. (Ephesians 5:22-31, II Corinthians 6:14)

A Church Family

The intent of Community Baptist is to be a spiritual family and provide that kind of family-like nurture. Being connected to a family of believers is vitally important for accountability, support, protection, and counsel. Through being connected to a church family, a couple is able to be known by leaders and others in the church. As we see their heart's desire to follow Christ and their preparation to reflect Christ in their union, we can rejoice and bless what they are doing. On the day when our leadership stands before God to give an account of what we have honored, we want to be found faithful to that which God has instituted. (Hebrews 10:24-25, Hebrews 13:7, 17)

A Covenant

Marriage is not dating, nor is it trial run at the relationship. It is a covenant before God to be life long partners in a one flesh relationship. It is a union between a man and woman, who are called of God to fulfill distinct and biblical roles. These are not chosen by man but ordained by God for the man and the woman. These are not interchangeable but divinely designated for each the man and the woman. When a marriage is lived out in God's design it will be a place of blessing, joy, and growth!
