What does the Bible teach us about giving?

Tithes and Offering Sermon PowerPoint for ChurchIn the Old Testament, Israel gave a 10% tithe to the Levites.  We traditionally have called this Levites’ Tithe simply a “Tithe” and many believers today still adhere to this as a baseline.  However, all together, with all the different tithes that were required by the law, the Jews actually gave more like 30%, AS A STARTING POINT IN GIVING.  They gave above that in free will offerings too, as well as setting aside part of their crops for the poor to harvest.  The first born and first fruits were seen as God’s.  Many gave from the heart and gave freely back to God what was His, but in the end it was also out of compulsion because of the need to adhere to the Law.    (To study this further, see Genesis 14:20, Genesis 28:20-22, Leviticus 27:30-33, Numbers 18:15-17, Deuteronomy 14:22-29, Deuteronomy 15:19-20, Leviticus 27:1-34 )

Under the new covenant, Jesus has fulfilled the law and we no longer are bound by it.  That doesn’t mean we don’t adhere to a framework of following God’s Law or give our first fruits anymore, but rather that we are no longer to give under compulsion to the Law.  Now we are to give freely from the heart, which is what is most honoring to God.  God loves a cheerful giver!

Where the old covenant gave us condemnation; the new covenant gives us justification and peace with God.  How much more should we be willing to give freely and generously so God’s work can be done in the world — to proclaim the gospel, to declare the new covenant ministry that gives us true life, and gives that message of life to others?  People who entrust their lives to Jesus Christ do not need to worry about whether tithing is commanded in the New Testament.  People who are being transformed by Christ to be more like Christ are to be generous in giving back to God what is His to begin with.  They want to give as much as possible to support the Gospel.  (2 Corinthians 8:1-24, 2 Corinthians 9:1-15 ….specifically 9:7…. Matthew 6:21 )
